Hydraean
Project
A modern IUU Fishing Monitoring platform.
The Hydraean Project is an IUU Fishing Monitoring platform that aims to empower marine authorities and organizations to make better decisions by providing them with an advanced, powerful, and accessible monitoring platform that aggregates data from multiple sources like satellite images, sensors, and incident reports from different authorities.
The project started in August 2020 as a winning entry for a hackathon to combat IUU Fishing in the Philippines. It is still under development and has functional prototypes. This project is inspired by Global Fishing Watch, as It aims to be a monitoring and analysis platform that allows authorities and organizations to perform surveillance of fishing activities around their respective areas without relying on an internet connection.
The Main Web Application Dashboard for the project is built using NextJS. And the Map Interface uses Mapbox. Users can interact with the system by using the sidebar or by interacting with the map.
The system relies primarily on AIS (Automatic Identification System) for vessels to produce monitoring insights.
With the current version of the system, users can do the following:
- Explore the recorded vessel tracks from the AIS dataset.
- Get Analytics of the vessels moving through Fishery Management Areas and Marine Protect Areas
- View vessel detections under Marine Protected Areas
The web application is mobile responsive, which allows users to access any features on the go. One limitation is the requirement for the mobile device to support more modern browsers like Google Chrome for a user experience.
The project has gone through a few iterations since August 2020 and has won several awards in the process. To learn more about this, you can visit the Project Documentation.
